Zak Crawley Claims Ignorance of Stokes' Provocative 'Frail Characters' Remarks

The English opener Crawley has indicated he was not familiar with statements from skipper Ben Stokes about the team environment not being "those lacking fortitude".

The all-rounder made this message in multiple interviews following England's defeat in the second Ashes against Australia earlier this month.

In the lead-up to the Adelaide Test, where England now face defeat at the earliest opportunity, Stokes stated he had allowed his sentiment to "circulate freely" within the squad.

"I have completed all the talking in recent days that I needed to have done," said Stokes.

But, after the opener scored a knock of 85 on the fourth day in the third Test, he commented: "I missed those remarks."

"I wasn't actively searching for it. Our approach is to take anything stated in the press with a pinch of salt," Crawley continued.

Frank Discussions and Steady Philosophy

The captain issued his "fragile individuals" observation subsequent to his side were beaten in Brisbane to fall 2-0 down.

The England squad subsequently took a break to a Queensland resort between the second and third matches.

Before the Adelaide contest, Stokes said his team had held "honest" talks and he had asked them to "display some fight" in their battle to stay alive in the series.

Nevertheless, the Kent batsman asserted the guidance from Stokes and head coach Brendon McCullum had remained consistent with their previous three years in charge.

"The atmosphere has been extremely upbeat, unchanged," noted Crawley. "The focus is just trying to be optimistic, playing our brand, with lots of freedom. We believed we were capable of an extraordinary feat entering this game."

Australia Close of Rapid Series Victory

The opener's wicket on day four came during a crucial triple-strike by Australian spinner Nathan Lyon.

Lyon's three wickets in a short spell – including the wickets of Harry Brook and Stokes himself – left the chasing side six down for 207 chasing a daunting total of 435.

Consequently, Australia need just four more wickets on the last day to move to an insurmountable three-nil lead with three matches played.

Defeat will extend England's winless run in this country to 18 Tests and ensure a fourth successive overseas Ashes defeat.

This series will be completed in only 11 days of cricket – with England fell the initial matches in two and four days respectively.

The last time 1921, when the Australians completed a series win in England in eight days, has the destination of the Ashes urn been determined so quickly. The hosts have also won in eleven days on two other instances in the modern era.

"This is disappointing," said Crawley. "We came here to win the Ashes and we're facing elimination now."

"There remains significant pride at stake and we will definitely view it with that mindset," he continued.

"The challenge has been difficult. Australia is a formidable team. It was always going to be tough touring here against them. They were the front-runners coming in to it have demonstrated their quality."

Ollie Pope's Position Under Scrutiny

Although Crawley's performance in Adelaide likely secures questions about his immediate future in the side, Ollie Pope looks under immense pressure for his position in the Melbourne Test on Boxing Day.

Pope was out for 17 in the team's second innings on day four, extending his modest returns against the old enemy.

Across sixteen Ashes knocks, the Surrey man has failed to score a half-century and boasts an average of just 17.62.

A solitary other England player in over a century – Amiss – has featured an equal number of innings in the top six in Ashes Tests and returned a poorer average.

But, the opener said any suggestion his teammate is under the microscope comes from "you guys" – referring to the journalists – "not inside the camp."

"The squad is fully aware how good of a player he is," said Crawley. "He has had a good year to be frank."

"He has produced some really good knocks. This is noise from the outside. There is no discussion like that regarding Pope in the camp," Crawley finished.
