The tournament joins the American and Australian Opens in utilizing video review technology.
Replay technology will be launched at Wimbledon for the 2025 edition.
Competitors will gain the right to challenge certain calls from the chair umpire, mirroring the practice currently in place at both the US Open and the Aussie major.
This innovation is slated for use on Centre Court and the number one court throughout the tournament and on the remaining featured courts when they are staging singles contests.
This development comes just a season following the All England Club implemented electronic line calling, which terminated the 147-year role of line judges.
Scope of Challenges
Players cannot to dispute the accuracy of the electronic line calling, but are allowed to ask for the umpire to review specific situations, including:
- Whether a ball has double-bounced.
- If a shot touched an opponent's racquet or person during play.
- Possible hindrance at the conclusion of a point.
Importantly, there will be no limit on the number of reviews a competitor can request.
Practical Application
An illustrative case took place in Indian Wells last week, where Daniil Medvedev used the video challenge against Jack Draper.
The British player conceded it was a tough situation for the official, but believed his opponent had "used the regulations effectively."
The umpire viewed a video and determined Draper was responsible for interference, granting the rally to Medvedev.
Growing Trend
This technology aren't exclusive to major tournaments. It was adopted at the US Open since 2023 and the Aussie Open this year.
Additionally, it is increasingly prevalent on the WTA circuit, and by the coming year the ATP circuit plans to have video reviews in place at every one of its events.
Further Updates
Another change at Wimbledon 2025 will be the addition of visual indicators on displays to complement the audio calls from the ELC system.
This solves instances where fans have occasionally been uncertain if a shot was out or in.
In other news, with precisely a century of days to go until the beginning of the tournament, the AELTC have also announced an expansion in daily capacity at the qualifiers in Roehampton.
