In a notable development ahead of next year's general election, two high-profile figures in Nepali politics have teamed up. This alliance emerges in the wake of large-scale and fatal youth-led protests that shook the country earlier this year and ultimately resulted in the ouster of the incumbent government.
A Pledge to Tackle Young People's Concerns
Television host Rabi Lamichhane, who leads the Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP), and Kathmandu Mayor Balendra Shah, a one-time rapper, have publicly vowed to prioritize the grievances highlighted by the new generation. This promise follows the violent anti-corruption unrest that occurred in September, which led to significant loss of life.
"Consensus must not be what a leader wants, it must be what the nation requires," remarked Lamichhane following the deal was finalized.
The late summer uprising was triggered by public anger over a short-lived government ban on social media platforms. This incident acted as a spark for deeper resentment stemming from a long period of economic stagnation and persistent allegations of systemic political corruption.
Terms of the New Electoral Partnership
According to the formal agreement, the roles for the approaching election have been clarified. Rabi Lamichhane will remain as the leader of the RSP. In turn, Balendra Shah will be the alliance's nominee for the position of prime minister in the election scheduled for 5 March.
- Rabi Lamichhane: A well-known 51-year-old television personality, he founded the RSP in 2022, channeling widespread public dissatisfaction with the country's older political class. He has in the past held the positions of deputy prime minister and interior minister. He was not long ago freed on bail in a case involving alleged cooperative fraud and organized crime.
- Balendra Shah (Balen): The 35-year-old mayor of Kathmandu is seen as a key figure in Nepal's current political transition. He played a role in forming the caretaker government that took over after the previous administration was dissolved.
Broader Government Consultations Taking Place
In a separate development, the sitting interim prime minister recently held consultations with several leading political leaders. These discussions included ex- prime ministers and the heads of rival mainstream parties, marking the initial such gathering since the period of the uprising.
Following these discussions, the prime minister took to social media to emphasize that conducting a free and fair election is a shared responsibility. The message reiterated the government's dedication to guaranteeing a safe and fear-free environment for the electoral process, adding that efforts are being made to remove any uncertainty.
